The attack of the beauty subscription services...

Since I have a final exam to take in an hour an half, Im doing everything BUT study. You know how it goes.

I wanted to make a quick post about all the new beauty subscription services that are popping up. It seems like the number of boxes increases exponentially every month. Im quite scared for my wallet since I'm tempted to sign up for all of them. But for now I will wait to see what people think of the services before I subscribe to another. So here is a concise list of all the current beauty / sample subscription services.

Beauty Army
$12/month
First kit: January 2012
Hand select 6 beauty samples each month. If you forget to choose, their experts will choose. Kit choices are based on a survey that you can retake whenever you like. Choice is from 9 different products. May include full-sized products. Some past samples include hair treatments, dry shampoo, eye shadows, eye mask, etc. Box value depends on items selected, but a general range of $40-100 has been seen.
Perks include a 'badge' program that includes 3 referrals for a free month, take surveys for discounts in the shop, and $10 off coupons every 3 months as a member.
Boxes ship 7-10 days after you first sign-up. Monthly new sample selection date coincides with sign up date.

Beauty Box 5
$12/month
First kit: February 2012
Beauty box filled with 4-5 packet samples, deluxe samples, and a full-sized product. All boxes will include mostly the same items, later on they selection may be based on the beauty profile filled out. May include full-sized products. Samples may include: makeup, skincare, hair care, nail, fragrances, dental products, beauty tools, etc. Box value yet to be determined.
Perks include a referral program. As of 2/14/12 coupon code for one month free (BOGO5).
Boxes ship mid-month.

Beauty Fix

First kit: October 2008
Hand select 8 beauty samples 4 times a year. Box choices are based on a person survey. Choice is from large selection of luxury brands. Products are mostly full-sized. Some past products include dry oils, body scrub, eye shadow, lip plump, hair removal kits, etc. Box value depends on item selected, but a general $200-400 has been seen.
Perks include gift cards to DermStore.com when fill out surveys, member-only discounts, and referral program. Currently (as of 2/17/12) coupon code for bloggers, first kit $19.99 (BFBLOG)
Boxes ship quarterly 7-10 days after selections are picked. Your first kit will ship within weeks of your sign-up date, subsequent kits will ship the same time as other members. Last kit was December 2011.

Birchbox*
$10/month.
First box: September 2010
Beauty box filled with 4-5 beauty samples from luxury brands. Boxes are loosely based on themes. Past themes have included Clarity and Beauty Innovations. Boxes vary greatly from person to person, currently around 20-25 different boxes each month. May include full-sized products. Some past samples include eye liner, perfumes, moisturizers, eye firming cream, clay masks, etc. Boxes generally have a value around $20-30.
Perks include birchbox points that can be used to buy full-sized products.
Boxes ship first week of the month.

Blissmobox
$19/month, +$3 for shipping if month-month subscription
First box: June 2011
Limited edition lifestyle boxes filled with full-sized products based on a specific theme. All products are organic and eco-friendly. There are 3 themes a month with your choice to select the themed box you want. All boxes of the same theme will have the same items. Some past themes include Salty and Sweet Snacks, Winter Defense, Eco Cleaning. Food themes will state if they include all vegan products, sometimes will have two version of the theme: one vegan, one non. Box value has ranged from $20-60.
Perks include the option to skip the month.
Box theme selection occurs on the 15th of the month, boxes ship around the 30th.

Crave Box
$10/month
First box: December 2011.
Themed lifestyle sample box with varying categories of items. The past themes have included: Holiday Pampering and Vitality. All boxes will include mostly the same items. May include full-sized products. Past samples have included nail pens, face cream, full-sized toning cream that retails for $120!, chocolates, olive oil, pedometer, 1-yr magazine subscription, etc. Box value has ranged from $60-130.
Boxes seem to ship mid/late month.

Conscious Box
$12/month +$7 shipping
First box: October 2011
Monthly lifestyle box filled with pure and sustainable products from ethical companies based on a specific theme. Past themes have included Detox and Gifts to Give the Soul. Boxes include a little bit of everything: vegan beauty, skin care, food, etc. All boxes will have the same items. Many products included are full-sized. Boxes are certified 100% vegetarian, but some items may not be vegan. Past products have included: ginger candies, lotion, superfood boost, antioxidant tablets, yoga mat wipe, shampoo, etc. Box value is generally around $30.
Perks include 1% of all sales donated to environmental organization, zero waste, and fair labor and wages.
Boxes ship the first week of the month.

Eco-Emi

First box: February 2011
Lifestyle box filled with 5-10 natural, organic, eco-friendly, or fair trade products. Boxes include a little bit of everything: beauty, food, household, and more. All boxes will include the same items. May include full-sized product. Past samples have included: lip balm, candles, soap, eye liner, tea, socks, etc. Box value has ranged from $15-30.
Perks include coupons.
Boxes ship mid month.

GoodeBox*
$16/month
First box: March 2012
Beauty box filled with 6 or more trial sized healthy, eco-sensitive, beauty and personal care products. Occasionally may include samples of natural or organic health and wellness products. Brands are screened to ensure that the brands are committed to healthy, sustainable ingredients and packaging. Boxes are customized based on beauty profile and any health concerns (allergies, vegan, aversion to strong smells, etc). Some brands they feature: Youngblood, Weleda, Eco Nvey, Stark Skincare, etc.
Perks include at least 20% off the regular retail price on received samples, facebook contests, brand sneak peaks.
Boxes ship mid month via USPS.

GlossyBox USA (first month May!)
$21/month
First box: pre-release April 2012
A German-based company with subscription service coming to the US. German company founded March 2011. It is a monthly beauty box filled with high-end samples. Based off the UK box it includes 5 deluxe beauty samples each month. Bags are loosely based on themes. Past UK themes have included: Festive looks and Girls Just Wanna to Have Fun. Boxes vary from person to person. May include full-sized products. Past products have included: nail polish, shampoo, body lotion, lip gloss, eyeliner, eye depuffing mask, etc. Box value yet to be determined.
Perks unknown.
US Box ship date unknown.

Green Grab Bag
$15/month
First box: October 2011
Monthly beauty bag filled at least 6 eco-friendly and natural beauty samples based on a theme. Past themes have included: Winter Skin Woes and Renewal. All bags will mostly have the same items. May include full-sized products. Past samples have included: sleep oils, face moisturizer, aromatic mister, mineral makeup, bath salts, etc. Bag value is unknown to me.
Perks include discounts on full-size items and 20% discount if subscribe yearly.
Box ships the 15th of every month.

GoGoGirlfriend
DO NOT SUBSCRIBE. GoGoGirlfriend beauty subscription service is terrible. Boxes ship out late (for example, nobody has gotten their January 2012 box yet), company claims you are paying to be a member of their website and the boxes are a free perk, impossible to contact customer service or get a real human response, and the products are cheap, weird brands. Only listing it so people do not sign up.

Julep Maven*
$19.99/month
Monthly nail polish box filled with 2-3 Julep brand nail polishes and other mani/pedi care products. Box selection/theme is based on a style quiz taken when you sign up. If you are unhappy with your selection, you have the option to choose an alternative. Past themes have included It Girl and American Beauty. All bags will mostly have the same items, colors will vary based on style. May include full-size products. Past products have included julep nail polish (obv), loose glitter, appliques, hand brightener, chocolates, etc. Box value is around $40.
Perks include 20% off all julep.com purchases and a referral program.
Boxes ship at the end of the month.

MyGlam *
$10/month
First box: December 2011.
Beauty bags filled with 4-5 of MyGlam's stylists favorite products. Bags are loosely based on themes. Past themes have included: Holiday Looks and Natural Products. All boxes will include mostly the same items. May include full-sized products. Past samples have included: cream lip stick, blotting papers, face mask, nail polish, mascara, etc. Box value has ranged from $40-60.
Perks include coupons in every bag.

My Platinum Box subscribers were not impressed with Feb. I would hold off.

Beauty box filled with 'grooming' samples for either men or women (subscription either his or her). Unsure if themed, if all boxes are the same, or if receive any full-sized products. Samples may include: skin care, fragrance, hair, lifestyle, and accessories. After first box shipped out in Feb 2012, many subscribers were highly disappointed with the samples and the value. First box value was determined to be only around ~$10-15.
Perks include earning up to 15% cash back on full size product purchases and automatic entry in monthly giveaways.
Boxes ship the beginning of the month.

Sample Society
$15/month
First box: March 2012
Monthly beauty box filled with 5 deluxe samples and a mini issue of Allure magazine each month. With your initial subscription you also get a year subscription to Allure magazine. If you do not want the Allure magazine subscription, you can get a $15 rebate! Samples may include: hair care, makeup, skin care, and fragrances. Box value ranges from $40-60
Perks include a year subscription to Allure magazine and monthly $15 gift code if you buy any full-sized product from your box.

When you sign up you will have a one-on-one personal consultation with one of their expert staff or makeup artists (text or video chat). The expert will make recommendations based on your needs and you can ask them any beauty questions you may have. Based on your beauty profile quiz and the personal consultation you will be sent a selection of luxury samples. The number of samples is not yet known. Samples may include: hair care, makeup, skincare, nails, and fragrances. Some featured brands include: MAC, Lancome, Estee Lauder, Clinique, NARS, and more.
Boxes ship 7-10 days after your consultation. Box value not yet determined.

TestTube (QVC version as well)
$29.95/quarterly +$8.95 shipping
First tube: 2006
Tube filled with a large number of beauty samples and many full-sized products. TestTube is quarterly, meaning you will receive your tube 4 times a year. All boxes will include the same items. Includes many full-sized products. Past products have included: collagen booster serum, styling cream, shampoo, eyeliner, mascara, baked blush, etc. Box values have ranged from $100-150.
QVC and NewBeauty website both have different TestTube's. The difference is that QVC's only has products available on QVC. A blogger stated she felt NewBeauty has more body and skin care, whereas QVC's has more cosmetics.
Perks include a $20 giftcard to spalook.com and a NewBeauty magazine in every tube.
Boxes ship quarterly. Last QVC and New Beauty tubes both shipped January 2012.

whew! That's a lot of boxes. I put an * next to the boxes that I am currently subscribed too (although I desperately want to cancel GoGo and many gals including me do not recommend).
