Birchbox: April 2013

My laptop is officially at the repair shop! It's been broken for 4 months now, so that may explain a lot... Hopefully I'll be back in full force soon!

Don't know what Birchbox is?
Birchbox is a monthly subscription service that delivers a little, heavenly box of premium beauty samples to your doorstep. Each month you will receive 4-5 samples (sometimes even full-sized products) and generally a goodie (energy booster, granola bar, etc). The samples range from make-up, polishes, skincare, body, hair, and fragrances. All from luxury, quality brands. Every month is a surprise, but the samples picked for you are based on a survey you fill out letting the gals know your style and skin-type. Birchbox costs just $10 a month, and your box will always be valued way above!

April 2013, Box #9
Birchbox this month is all about tiny tweaks with big results. Which is why they teamed up with Women's Health magazine and their beauty and wellness experts to put out a collection of their favorite products to update and rejuvenate your life!

Information Cards:

Products:
Beauty ProtectorProtect & Detangle
Great for all hair types, this nourishing elixir performs seven hair-healing functions. Among them: locking in color, adding shine, and instantly detangling.
Full Size: 8.0 oz ($21.95)
Size Received: 1.0 oz ($2.75)
When I was little I would use a detangler every day, I remember it came in a green alligator container. Adorbs. So if my hair is the same thickness and texture as it was when I was 8, why don't I use detangler every day?In December, Birchbox gave me a very similar product from 12 Benefits that I just ran out of. I was pleasantly surprised to get a similar product this month. This has 7 great benefits: it seals your hair cuticle, smooths and moisturizers, defrizzes, locks in color, adds shine, and protects your hair against UV rays and heat. It works like a charm and is actually just slightly cheaper than 12 Benefits. I may just use my BB points to buy this!
Cruelty-free!

Supergoop!Daily Correct SPF 35 CC Cream in Light/Medium
This next generation CC cream provides corrective coverage and trip protects against UVA, UVB, and infrared-A rays.
Full Size: 1.6 oz ($32.00)
Size Received: 0.06 oz ($2.00)
I love tinted moisturizers, which pretty much by default means I love CC creams. They do a multitude of things in one quick swipe. Supergoop's Daily Correct has light-diffusing mica that helps to soften the look of your skin so wrinkles and pores disappear. It also has antioxidants that help to correct your skintone. The color was perfect for my skin tone, especially now that I have a tan. It made my skin look flawless, matte, and still not monotoned. I felt great leaving the house. Half way through the day it pretty much wore out. I could see all my imperfections clearly, had built up of yellow makeup residue in spots, and felt greasy again. But in the products defense, my office is super humid so its like Im in a spa room for 8 hours.
Cruelty-free!

LAFACE LaboratoriesBeaux Yeux Beautiful Eyes Concentrate Intensive
A hefty does of hyaluronic acid amps up moisture levels, while an advance peptide complex halts wrinkle formation.
Full Size: 1.0 oz ($160.00)
Size Received: 0.1 oz ($16.00)
LAFACE is a company that focused on plant stem cell technology to address skincare issues. Beaux Yeux is an intense hyaluronic acid concentrate that moisturizes the skin around the eye helping to combat puffy eyes and dark circles and reduce fine lines. It also boost collagen production and effectively help reverse the appearance of any damage. It seems like a really small, expensive sample at first. But all you need is a teensy bit. It will take me two weeks to just use the cream that is on the top of the lid. I could feel this working immediately. My skin felt moisturized and a little tingly after application. I've heard so many positive reviews that I am hopeful it will work for my tired eyes!
Cruelty-free!

CaudalieDivine Oil
Made with a blend of grape, argan, hibiscus, and sesame oils, this multitasking wonder gives skin, hair, and nails a gorgeous glow.
Full Size: 3.4 oz ($49.00)
Size Received: 0.1 oz ($1.47)
Just like pure argan oil, this dry oil blend can be used for multiple purposes. The list of ingredients is immense for a dry oil blend. It can be used on dry skin, as a moisturizer, pick me up in normal lotions or serums, on cuticles, or dry hair. Honestly though I would prefer to use 100% argan oil than a large blend. This company has also started selling to China, so although the company themselves do not directly test on animals, their products are tested in China, and will ultimately be tested on animals.
Sells to China, therefore not cruelty-free!

Hail Merry: Chocolate Macaroons
It tastes too good to be true: These decadent treats are raw, vegan, gluten-free, and made with only natural, non-GMO ingredients.
Full Size: 3.5 oz ($5.00)
Size Received: 0.88 oz ($1.26)
A Vegan food item!! Nu uh! I don't believe you! I almost quit Birchbox because I was so tired of all the dairy laden foods they put in beauty boxes. Granted food is food, at least this is food that almost everyone can enjoy! This product is raw, gluten-free, kosher, and vegan! The chocolate flavor only has  6 ingredients total: maple syrup, shredded coconut, cocoa, extra virgin olive oil, vanilla, and sea salt. These are chocolately and rich, but still sweet and coconutty. I felt satisfied after one. A lot of people didn't like these and blamed it on the fact that they are vegan, but its because its rich dark dark cocoa so its going to be a bit bitter!
Vegan!

Women's Health 1-Year Subscription
1 year subscription ($9.99)
This was one of the most exciting bonuses from a curated box! I used to subscribe to Women's Health magazine and really enjoyed it. There is a great balance between exercise, healthy eating, and entertaining articles. I somehow currently have 5-6 free subscriptions to different magazines, with over half being health/fitness magazines, so I haven't cashed in on this subscription yet. Either way it is a great added value to my box!

Total value of my April 2013 Birchbox:$33.47
A free magazine subscription and two products clearly marked as vegan! This was my box! I couldn't wait to gobble up the macaroons and loved the mix of products I received!

What do you think of my April Birchbox? How does it compare to yours? Let me know in the comments below!

Birchbox: March 2013

Summer is officially here! It's a bit too hot today to sit outside, so I don't feel too guilty sitting inside on my computer!

March 2013, Box #12
March is time for basketball fanatics to gear up for the National Championship. I spent all March watching game after game hoping my brackets wouldn't get messed up and that my teams would make it all the way. My alma mater (Go Marquette!) gave me a few heart attacks early on, but we ended up going pretty far! And the University of Louisville, the city I now call home, made it all the way to the top! The city was so energerized and proud. It was pretty awesome to be apart of. Birchbox decided to join in the fun and filled the box with products worthy of a spot on the team, newbies to veteran all-stars.

Information Cards:

Products:
Oscar BlandiHair Lift Mousse
Inflate limp locks with this innovative volume-reviving mousse. Made with high-tech ingredients, it amplifies each strand for voluminous hair that looks and feels full of life.
Full Size: 6.3 oz ($23.00)
Size Received: 1.0 oz ($3.65)
I've heard so many good things about Oscar Blandi's dry shampoo that I was super psyched to get this mousse. Half the time hair products I receive in subscription boxes are for thick or curly hair, which I have neither. What I need is a whole lotta lift without weighing it down. This is a perfect find for a big event where I want my hair to have lots of volume. My hair looked like I just left the salon, a perfect blow out. The night I used it, I got so many compliments on my hair! The product did build up a little in my hair, so I wouldn't use it if I knew I wasn't going to shower the next day or my second day hair would look like day three, no bueno.
Cruelty-free!

MAKESatin Finish Eyeshadow in Great Lakes
This new brand's pretty pigments have serious staying power, and we love that one-third of all sales are donated to charity.
Full Size: 0.1 oz ($18.00)
Size Received: 0.03 oz ($5.40)
A brand that donates a third of all sales to charity!? That is pretty sweet. The brand donates to We See Beauty Foundation that helps accelerate women-led, worker-owned cooperatives. It is a great way to empower a community and help drive the local economy.  I received the color Great Lakes which is a silver/grey blue. I didn't find this eyeshadow super pigmented, but it can be applied wet for a more intense color. It is a perfect color for every day wear.
Cruelty-free!

MAKEFace Primer Broad Spectrum SPF 30
Pump up your makeup's endurance and protect skin with this two-in-one base and SPF.
Full Size: 1.0 oz ($30.00)
Size Received: 0.18 oz ($5.40)
I love when primers have SPF. My tinted moisturizer has SPF, but because I use a stippling application I dont believe I am getting as much coverage as I should have. This not only has SPF 30 but also has light-diffusing microspheres to make your application seems airbrushed and soft. Plus it fills in fine lines and wrinkles, has vitamin E and squalene to moisturize and protect against environmental damage. It smells and applies like a sunscreen which made me nervous, but it did dry nicely and didn't leave my skin looking greasy. I'm not sure I really have an opinion on it, it worked, but I wasn't blown away by it.
Cruelty-free!

WhishShave Crave Shaving Cream
The organic shea butter in this foam-free shaving cream makes for an insanely close shave and leaves skin incredibly soft. We love the exclusive blueberry scent.
Full Size: 5.0 oz ($20.00)
Size Received: 0.75 oz ($3.00)
When I opened my box all I could smell was a sickly sweet sugar smell. It turns out it is this shaving cream. Whish was created when the creator used her husband's shaving cream. She felt she had had the closest and smoothest shave of her life, but she smelled like a man. Her husband decided to make her wish come true and set out to make an all-natural, chemical-free version for her. I confirmed with the company that all products are vegan and cruelty-free! The product is a non-foaming cream that moisturizes with squalene (vegetable derived), organic shea butter, and organic raspberry butter. It smooths your skin with organic green tea and coconut oil and nourish with jojoba seed oil. The smell is a bit intense, but it does give a very smooth and long lasting shave. And my legs feel so moisturized and soft for days.
Cruelty-free!

Madewell: Nail Emery Board
We teamed up with Madwell to create this adorable mini savior, patterned after a print from their new spring collection.
Full Size: 1 emory board ($5.00)
Size Received: 1 emory board ($5.00)
This is probably one of my favorite things in this box. Seems silly, but this emery board is best one I currently own. Some kind of rip my nails in layers instead of smoothing. This smooths, isn't too rough, and of course is the cuttest pattern.

Total value of my March 2013 Birchbox:$22.45
I think Birchbox is starting to step up their game. This was an all around awesome box.

Birchbox: February 2013

It's interesting how some boxes seem like they will be awesome, but turn out meh...

February 2013, Box #35
This month, Birchbox (like Ipsy) capitalized on all the big holiday events and put together a box that is worthy of the red carpet. Stating that even if we don't have a posse of pros, Birchbox has experts that will keep us red carpet ready.

Information Cards:

Products:
Jouer: Matte Moisture Tint in Linen
This SPF 15 oil-free tinted moisturizer blends in beautifully to even out skin and control shine.
Full Size: 1.7 oz ($38.00)
Size Received: 0.07 oz ($1.56)
Jouer has only ever popped up on my radar in birchboxes. First with their special Birchbox pink lip gloss and then with their Luminizing Moisture Tint. I absolutely love the Luminizing Moisture Tint. It is perfect coverage for the summer, adds a gorgeous pearlescent glow to your skin, and leaves my skin moisturized all day. The only problem is it is way too expensive! I currently use TheBalm's BalmShelter which sells for ~$20 for 2.15 oz, much better value. Either way I was excited to try the newest from Jouer. The matte version is oil-free version controls shine with titanium and zinc oxides and leaves skin velvety smooth. I tried this out and immediately knew it wasn't going to work well for me. My skin looked pasty, dry, pores and wrinkles amplified, and just completely flat. My combination skin did not enjoy it at all.
Cruelty-free!

VasantiBrighten Up! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator
This exfoliating cleanser uses professional-grade (read: effective) microderm crystals and papaya enzymes to brighten skin.
Full Size: 4.23 oz ($34.00)
Size Received: 0.7 oz ($5.63)
I adore receiving face scrubs. Years of acne and years of no solution, I'm always willing to try new products. This product is a dermatologist-grade scrub that brightens, exfoliates, and cleanses all in one treatment. It uses papaya enzymes to dissolve down dead skin cells, microderm exfoliating crystals to fade fine lines and acne scars, and aloe vera, coconut, and vitamins B and E to nourish and soothe skin. But it is safe for use on sensitive skin. This sounded like it was the jack pot for me. I started using it once a week and was in love. My skin felt so smooth and soft and visibly brighter. BUT! My skin broke out like crazy after a few weeks of using this. I was so embarrassed by how badly my skin looked. Even a coworker asked what was wrong with my skin... Too bad since it is certified vegan and well priced.
Cruelty-free!

Juicy CoutureCouture La La
Roll out the red carpet for this new scent, a stunning mix of mandarin, red currant, lilly, and orange blossom.
Full Size: 3.4 oz ($90.00)
Size Received: 0.05 oz ($1.32)
The third Viva la Juicy fragrance I've received in my Birchbox. This version of the perfume is a little rock and a little feminine. It has notes of sparkling fruits like mandarin, green apple, red currant, and florals like hyacinth, lily of the valley, peony, violet, orange flower, and a soft musk. I will admit it is a nice, sweet fragrance. I don't see how it is suposed to have a rock edge to it. The peony and lilly are very strong and sweet. But this is a perfect daytime fragrance or something for a younger girl. And like I noted in August, I cannot find a concrete answer on Elizabeth Arden fragrances' animal testing policy. If someone knows it, let me know!
Unsure if tested on animals.

TIGICatwalk Session Series Transforming Dry Shampoo
Master stylists always have this oil-busting dry shampoo in their kit. It leaves behind a tousled, piecey finish.
Full Size: 5.2 oz ($19.95)
Size Received: 2.0 oz ($7.67)
Dry Shampoos are a gift from the gods. I used to use baby powder on those second...or third day hair days while in college. Cheap, effective, but messy and made my hair chalky. I will always try out new dry shampoos that will prove to be a better option. TIGI's animal cruelty status is a bit iffy. The website says that it is cruelty-free but some sources say they do test when necessary by law. So I'll leave it up to you to decide. Either way, I won't be buying this dry shampoo. I sprayed it into my hair and instantly felt icky. My hair just looked chalky and felt awful and teased. It felt heavier and couldn't be styled. It was awful! So far the best dry shampoo I've tried was Freeman's Instant Dry Shampoo through Beauty Army back in February 2012 (post can be found here). I really should buy that again...
Unsure if tested on animals.

Ghiradelli: Milk Chocolate with Caramel Filling
You deserve a little sweetness. Try Gihradelli's Milk & Caramel Square solo or experiment - s'mores or baked into a cookie. who says you can't riff on decadence?.
Full Size: 10 squares ($4.99)
Size Received: 1 square ($0.50)
It really frustrates me that Birchbox has included so much chocolate in their boxes in the past year. I'm not the only one who doesn't eat milk. So many people have milk allergies, you'd think they'd think about that...

Total value of my February 2013 Birchbox:$16.68
Not my favorite month. I actually decided this month that I didn't want to subscribe again, but then they automatically resubscribed me for the year and I decided what the hell. Birchbox is such a hit or miss, but many of my all-time favorites right now were things I received in my Birchbox.

Birchbox: January 2013

My year subscription to Birchbox is about to end, it is a hard decision to try and decide to keep getting it or not.

January 2013, Box #1
The new year isn't about changing who you are but making sure you refocus on things that keep falling to the bottom of your to-do list. Birchbox included in this month a poster showing 25 ways to make 2013 awesome. In the note from the team they ask how we are going to make this year the best. For me, my goals are to run a half marathon, study for really big test, and make sure I don't sweat the little stuff and enjoy life. How about you?

Information Cards:

Products:
OjonDamage Reverse Instant Restorative Hair Serum
Repair stressed strands with this aromatic hair treatment - exotic ojon and macadamia oils work together to smooth and hydrate hair.
Full Size: 1.7 oz ($25.00)
Size Received: 0.07 oz ($1.03)
More hair oil... This product is meant to tame frizz and flyaways, boost shine, and add softness. You can use it on damp hair as a heat-protectant or as a leave-in styling/hair treatment. Because of my thin, thin hair I do better with hair oil mists. Even a drop of oil is too much for my hair. But either way, I will not buy or use Ojon products as the company is owned by Estee Lauder and therefore is not cruelty-free.
Tested on animals!

AlessandroNail Polish in Blue Lagoon
Launching exclusively in the Birchbox shop, this extra opaque nail polish has a satiny formula and a wide brush for easy application.
Full Size: 0.34 oz ($12.00)
Size Received: 0.17 oz ($6.00)
I've never heard of Alessandro. They are a German brand that are selling their line in America exclusively on Birchbox. Alessandro is considered a professional grade polish. They tout having a wide, easy application brush, fast drying, and incredible long durability. I received a mini bottle in blue lagoon, a cream navy blue color. It isn't particularly a color I wear often, but the color itself is really pretty. I'm not sure if it was because of the mini handle/brush size, but I had a hard time applying the polish without streaking it on the sides of my fingers. The polish did seem to dry quickly, but for me it started to peel/crack off the next day.
Cruelty-free!

Harvey PrinceSkinny Chic Perfume
Get a glass-half-full disposition with this optimistic blend of juicy Meyer lemon, white grapefruit, and pink plumeria.
Full Size: 1.7 oz ($55.00)
Size Received: 0.07 oz ($2.26)
Another Harvey Prince perfume? This is my fourth Harvey Prince from Birchbox. That seems a little excessive. For me, these fragrances just don't have any staying power. I can smell them for a few hours just ever so slightly. Skinny Chic is a fragrance that is formulated to keep you energized and conquer cravings. This scent is dominated by mint, green apple, lotus blossom, grapefruit, and a creamy depth made up of warm amber, bergamont, and white cedarwood. To me it smells like a plumeria scent with a little kick. Of all the Harvey Prince fragrances, this may be my favorite. I wouldn't buy it myself, but it is a perfect daytime fragrances for those who want something fresh and light.
Cruelty-free!

theBalmPut a Lid On It
Keep that pretty eye shadow crease-free with this stay-put primer, which also prevents smudges and smears.
Full Size: 0.4 oz ($18.00)
Size Received: 0.125 oz ($5.63)
This is a creamy, thick almost metallic beige-colored primer. TheBalm promises a formula that is smudge-free, long lasting, and keep your shadows vibrant. It absorbs oils to allow you to have a clean canvas when applying your shadow. After using it the first time I realized how little you need for each application, I think this sample may last me months! I decided to test it against my go to Sephora brand eye primer, wearing one primer on each eye. Both allowed for more vivid application, no smudging or creases, but theBalm's beat out my current eye primer ever so slightly in the wear category. This would be a great primer to buy next time I am out!
Cruelty-free!

Fresh: Lotus Youth Preserve Face Cream
With antioxidant-rich lotus flower extracts, this lush moisturizer protects skin from free radicals and hydrates for a full 24 hours.
Full Size: 1.7 oz ($42.00)
Size Received: 0.14 oz ($3.46)
This was considered an extra, so I won't diss the small sample size. We did receive two packets so that is a plus? I'm new to the Fresh brand, but I already am in love with it. A company that uses all natural ingredients from around the world. This moisturizer has been 'proven' to hydrate for 24 hours and is designed with a complex of ingredients that minimize and prevent signs of aging and boost radiance. I did like this cream as it absorbed quickly and was perfect for nighttime. It apparently didn't wow me, but it seems to have a pretty big following.
Cruelty-free!

Total value of my January 2013 Birchbox:$18.38
Not my favorite box. It is kind of frustrating that 4 out of 5 brands are repeats. Sometimes I love getting the same company, but when I clearly reviewed a product poorly or stated I do not want to see anything from this brand again it sucks to see that brand show up multiple times. I'm happy about the repeat of thebalm, but Im tired of Harvey Prince and I don't want Ojon products!

What do you think of my January Birchbox? How does it compare to yours?  How are you going to make 2013 awesome? Let me know in the comments below!

December 2012, Box #1
Let the festivities begin! December was all about making you feel and look your best for the holiday season. Birchbox cutely decorated the box this month and included a gift tag and gift box that could be reused. I loved how things used to be wrapped up individually with tissue paper since it really was like opening 5 teeny adorable presents. They've since moved towards small card boxes, which means quicker processing and most likely lower production costs. If it means Birchbox gets to share with more people and keep the price at $10, I'm quite okay with the change!

Information Cards:

Products:
FreshCitron de Vigne Eau de Parfum
Wine aficionados and perfume snobs alike love this pinot-infused fragrance, which pairs a rich grape core with bright notes of citrus.
Full Size: 3.4 oz ($80.00)
Size Received: 0.25 oz ($5.88)
My oh my, what a huge perfume sample!! I only know fresh because of the free Sephora lip tints on your birthday, I had no idea they were such scent connoisseurs. Citron de Vigne is a really complex scent. The 'pinot noir' core is compromised of bergamot, dark almond, musk, white sandalwood, and rose. It has a bubbly citrus top notes and deep earthy base to really make you feel like you are among the grape vines in France. This scent is light, fresh, and crisp without being too sweet. I generally have been wearing this as a daytime perfume, but it is so sophisticated. I'm tempted to buy the $20 rollerball!
Cruelty-free!

12 BenefitsInstant Healthy Hair Treatment
Top stylists love this protective leave-in mist, which tamps down frizz and restores the vibrancy of color-treated or damaged hair.
Full Size: 6.0 oz ($19.00)
Size Received: 1.5 oz ($4.75)
I have been using leave-in mists for years. With my thin, oily hair I can't use creams or gels or most mouses unless I want to shower ever 6 hours. These leave-in mists allow me to get the benefits without all the grease. My absolute favorite being Sebastian Potion 9 Lite, which protects and adds volume. They were recently bought by Proctor & Gamble, so their cruelty-free status is somewhat murky. 12 Benefits states clearly on the bottle that they don't test on animals and is 100% vegan. Sweet! This hair treatment smooths frizz, repairs damage and strengthens, prevents split ends, moisturizes and seals hair, prevents flat iron/blow dry damage, protects from chlorine, wind, and sun, detangles, and adds shine, softness, and a silky finish! All that in one bottle, one spritz, and no added weight to my hair!? This product is so reasonably priced too. I think I have a new favorite.
Cruelty-free!

SamparUltra Hydrating Fluid
This gorgeous Parisian moisturizer helps skin retain hydration and prevents moisture evaporation while also protecting it from pollution.
Full Size: 1.7 oz ($71.00)
Size Received: 0.5 oz ($20.88)
Initially this product would not pump. I sat trying to get the pump to work for maybe 5 minutes? I gave up and tried again a few days later and still no go. I contacted Birchbox in hopes they'd have some leftover, but they didn't so they sent me 100 BB points. Strangely enough, a month and half later, it has started to pump! I could never see spending $35/oz on moisturizer. Ever. Although this hydrating fluid is stated to reduce water loss by 20% after only 2 days of application! It also helps to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, protect skin from the elements, and add back a youthful glow. I will admit this stuff is pretty great. It absorbs so quickly, leaves my skin feeling moisturized, and somehow is still non-oily. If you have the money, I'd go for it!
Cruelty-free!

theBalmHot Mama Shadow & Blush All-in-One
How cute is this peachy blush? The universally flattering pigment is laced with faint golden shimmer to add warmth to your complexion.
Full Size: 7.08 g ($20.00)
Size Received: 1 g ($2.83)
I have wanted to try this blush for quite some time. Many people think it is a good dupe of NARS Orgasm blush. They aren't much different in price, and NARS is a cruelty-free company, but it is still nice to try out dupes! This is a bright peach blush with loads of illuminating gold shimmer. The minute you sweep this on your look more awake and perky. I didn't think it would look good on me, but it really does flatter every skin shade. theBalm's blush products seriously are the best. Pigmented, illuminating, and last forever. I love this blush and it is now part of my daily routine!
Cruelty-free!

Emily's Chocolates: Dark Chocolate Peppermint Holiday Fortunes
Filled with festive messages, these treats have surpassed ginger snap cookies as our favorite holiday goodie.
Full Size: 6 cookies ($5.99)
Size Received: 1 cookie ($1.00)
I had high hopes that this would be vegan! I mean dark chocolate, but of course it wasn't. I forgot to take a photo before I gave it away. Woops. It made a cute addition to my sister's Christmas gift though!
(Product not vegan)

Extras
Rent The Runway: $50 off dress rental of $125
The idea of Rent The Runway is pretty cool. Rent a gorgeous, expensive dress for 4 (or 8) days, wear it to your event, and then ship it on back for a fraction of the cost. Rent The Runway also lets you rent a backup size dress for free too! I am always between sizes, so this is a must for me. The cost to rent is generally 10% of the full value of the dress, with many dress renting at $50-200. They do all the cleaning for you, so no extra costs for you. If I had a big time event to go to and wanted to look beyond glamorous, I would for sure use this service. No more combing through 100s of ugly, cheap dresses at The Rack, I'll be dripping in luxury wearing designer goods.

This was a box that I initially wasn't too excited about. But then got a chance to test everything out and figured out how great all the products are! I wish all perfume sample sizes were as big as the fresh sample! And what a great mixture of product types. A little make-up, hair, fashion, skin, scent. Its got it all covered!

Birchbox: November 2012

A little extra free-time on my hands this week means I've got time to play around with my beauty box samples and update my blog!

November 2012, Box #20
November in America means Thanskgiving. Birchbox went along and made this month's box all about giving: giving thanks, giving back, and giving treats. Birchbox made a large donation to The Art of Elysium, a non-profit organization that allows actors/artists to dedicate time to children battling disease. This month we also received a handy gift guide, with all sorts of ideas for different people in our lives.

Products:
ModelCoFibre Lashxtend Lengthening Mascara
Falsies without the fuss. This innovative mascara uses tiny lash-extending fibers to give you a lengthy fringe. Tip: Rotate the wand inside the bottle to pick up the fibers.
Full Size: unknown ($24.00)
Size Received: possibly full-size? ($24.00)
ModelCo is a company started by models and other individuals in the fashion industry that took it upon themselves to create products they felt weren't on the market. This mascara uses fibers to make your lashes longer and thicker. The ingredients have all kinds of polymers, waxes, and nylons. I'm sure it is similar to blinc, but the wax probably helps to produce even longer, thicker fibers. I did talk to a ModelCo rep who let me know that the product is not vegan, as it has lanolin wax (sheep wool wax), so I traded it for a tarte lipsurgence lip stain. I love my Blinc, so Im not too upset that I didn't get to try this out.

Lulu OrganicsLavender + Clay Sage Hair Powder
Revive second-day locks by working this organic dry shampoo into your roots. You'll get plenty of lift, but no residue.
Full Size: 4.0 oz ($30.00)
Size Received: 0.17 oz ($1.28)
For months, gals have been raving about Lulu Organics. They have a sample pack for sale on their website that I was always tempted to try out, luckily I got to try their lavender + clay sage hair powder. Ive been using baby powder and other dry shampoos for years and years. In college, there was no way I was going to waste 40 minutes of precious study time showering every minute my hair got a little funky. My biggest complaint with hair powders is that I always get residue on my clothes or my hair turns a big white. I found this stuff worked really nicely. Immediately I saw an improvement, it smelled great (and not like a baby's ass), and I was able to brush out the chalky-ness. A little goes a long way. I'd definitely be interested in buying the full-size. 4 oz would last years!

Miracle Skin TransformerVanish Instant Imperfection Corrector
Before applying makeup, prep skin with this serum-infused primer, which has optical diffusers that mask imperfections.
Full Size: 1 oz ($58.00)
Size Received: 0.1 oz ($5.80)
This is a two-in-one product, half serum, half primer. It helps to improve skin tone, reduce dark spots, brightens skin, and smooths skin for a perfect makeup base. I haven't tried this out yet. Some people have been raving that this product has helped them with blemishes and large pores. I didn't like any of the Miracle Skin Transformer products Ive gotten in past Birchboxes, but you can't deny 150 positive reviews! It is a silica based primer, which are my favorite, because they make your skin silky smooth and even.
Cruelty-free!

Atelier CologneRose Anonyme Petite Cologne Absolute
Thanks to spicy ginger and a touch of bergamot, this sexy new rose scent is more sophisticated than sweet.
Full Size: 1 oz ($75.00)
Size Received: 0.03 oz ? ($2.50)
I love getting perfumes in my Birchboxes, but I am so desperately happy that I got this. I've never had a stronger reaction to a perfume, ever. The included postcard's imagery paints a picture, plus the back states: "She turned the dial until the safe opened, revealing the diamond. She had stolen jewels before, but none compared with this one. She left a single rose and the scent of her perfume in its place for him to find. In a moment she’d be halfway around the world and he would be in pursuit. The chase began again…"
And then I opened up the vial and breathed the story in... Top notes of rich bergamot, ginger, and Turkish rose essence mark a very spicy, sultry true rose scent. As it melts into your skin more rose and incense from Somalia and velvet oud help to soften the spice and bring out more of that freshly cut rose. The base is of patchouli, papayrus, and benzoin. This mix of sweet, spicy, and mysterious makes me crazy. I desperately want the full-size. Desperately.

Chuao ChocolatierPotato Chip ChocoPod
These bite-sized artisanal treats are made with premium Venezuelan cacao and come in a range of unexpected flavors.
Full Size: 7 pods ($7.95)
Size Received: 1 pod ($1.14)
There has to be other Birchbox members that are allergic/don't eat milk! I gave this away, but thought it was a cute little product. I could see giving a pack of these as a little gift. The Chuao Chocolatier's make all sorts of quirky flavors. Like Maple Bacon, Spicy Maya, and Firecracker. It looks like some of the flavors may be vegan, but unfortunately the potato chip flavor is made with milk chocolate.

I do love shoes and these are cute, but they are darn expensive shoes and all leather. The company has a great idea selling all different heel heights for each color they sell. You can really customize for the perfect shoe.

Total value of my November 2012 Birchbox:$34.72 + coupon
I enjoyed this box a lot. Even though the full-size, highest value product wasn't vegan I was able to trade it in for a lip stain that I really wanted, sounds like a good deal to me. Birchbox has it's ups and downs, but it is worth it when you find products you would never have sampled without it!
